Line Plot Updated

Line Plots are new to 2nd grade!

Second Graders worked together to apply Line Plot skills.

  • CCSS.Math.Content.2.MD.D.9
  • Generate measurement data by measuring lengths of several objects to the nearest whole unit, or by making repeated measurements of the same object. Show the measurements by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in whole-number units.
  • CCSS.Math.Content.2.MD.D.10
  •  Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems using information presented in a bar graph.
  • Line plots are not taught in Saxon Math so I had to find my own materials and supplies! I probably should not admit this online, but I thought a line plot was just another name for a line graph. I also thought a line plot was similar to a pictograph but that it just used Xs instead! I quickly found out there is a big difference!
line plot is a graph that shows frequency of data along a number line.
line graph is a graph that uses line segments to connect data points and shows changes in data over time.

I found MANY great resources to help teach line plots. My favorite resource is an interactive lesson that can be used on a Smart Board or Mimio!

Two of my other favorite resources are these online FREE Common Core Worksheets that have several line plot practice worksheets for practice.

I was inspired to make my own "Constructing Line Plot Pack" to use with my students. While making it, I needed some advice so I met one Sunday afternoon with close family friend and high school Algebra III, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and College Calculus  teacher, Connie Miller to set me straight about Line Plots! Thank you Connie for great advice!
Connie is the littlest cutie in the picture! 3rd from the left! I'm a lucky duck because she taught me in high school. She tutored me through Stats in college. She helped me understand MATH once AGAIN for my own classroom!
Thank you Connie!
Here are a few pages of my 33 paged "Constructing Line Plot Pack".

Here are a few of the graphing apps that I have either already used in my classroom or will be using soon. Click links for more information about each app.
