I have been teaching 2nd grade for 17 years! Each year, I have tried a different approach to teach 2 digit subtraction with regrouping to supplement our Saxon Math series! I am amazed that just when I think I have found the "BEST PRACTICE", the following year-it doesn't work out as well! So yet again, this year I have researched for more ideas, catchy phrases & songs, bought more hands on manipulatives & containers (with my own money) and came up with a new twist :)
This year it's SPAGHETTIOS!
I bought 1 for each student! 98cents per can (WALMART)!
It must truly show my age or how I ate when I grew up, but some of my students hadn't even heard of them or eaten them before. I had to show them the commercials on You Tube so they understood the phrase- Uh Oh Spaghettios.
Quick Sneak Peek VIDEO to Uh Oh Spaghettios!
After several days using different materials and supplies, students did grasp the concept of borrowing and ungrouping, but it's a struggle each year to get them to remember TO DO IT on their own!
SPAGHETTIOS have helped us this year! The students love to say UH OH Spaghettios when they need to regroup. When practicing on dry erase boards without manipulatives, students move the can of Spaghettios from the right side of their desks to the left side of their desks as a reminder to borrow! They even use the cans when completing dittos on their own. I smile while I watch the students move the cans on their desks while completing papers with both regrouping and NO regrouping problems. It has helped them to remember when to borrow and when NOT to borrow. Hopefully, next week when they take their cans home- they will still say- UH OH Spaghettios and remember to borrow!
Can't wait for our tasting party!
So pleased with my purchase! We use base ten blocks, money, and these 10s and 1 pieces on the dry erase mats for both addition and subtraction. I use plastic veggie trays to store the pieces. Will need to get a picture for u!
Here is a PACK that I created to help my students with 2 digit subtraction with regrouping. It is also available as a SMART BOARD NOTEBOOK File.
Common Core Standards
I have found so many cute sayings/songs over the years, but students seem to get more caught up on remembering the chant or song than why I want them to sing it. So far this year, students have been remembering this chant! I am hoping the more we say it- the more they remember & it becomes habit!
This is a poster, but we used an identical SMART BOARD notebook lesson to show each step hands- on.
Students used these slides to practice borrowing and ungrouping.
We used these slides whole group, but we will use them again individually for quick practice or for assessment.
Obviously we did not use this Pack all at one session. Next week we will learn how to check our answers which is required for the Common Core.
We will be tasting the Spaghettios and describing them to practice adjectives.

This is my ALL time favorite MATH App to use for instruction and for students to use to practice on their own!
LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS APP!
* Solve the regrouping problem as you would with a pen and paper. Do carryovers and borrows by writing them over the problem with your finger.
* Two and three digit questions presented.
* You can set the number of questions and the time to solve the questions in the setting area.
* Be ahead of the curve with this simple yet powerful learning app.
Here are 2 other Great Apps for 2 digit subtracting with regrouping! They both have GREAT options!
Subtraction ! ! is a great way to learn and practice subtraction. From simple 1-digit problems to more advanced multi-digit problems, Subtraction ! ! will provide the user the necessary guidance and practice to master subtraction.
This is a great app to use for differentiating instruction. Students work through levels.
Math-tastic is a set of apps specifically focused on the needs of kids learning math.
Learning math takes focus and Math-tastic is built from the ground-up to provide a focused framework for reinforcing the fundamentals of math while having some fun.
Math-tastic Subtraction is focused only on teaching subtraction. Starting from single digit subtraction, kids can work their way up through ten levels of subtraction mastery. Math-tastic allows the student to write their own answer on the iPad's touch screen, allowing the student to work through the problem on their own. Once they have written out their answer, they can then enter the answer for instant feedback.
Every answer is saved, so you and your math student can review questions and answers later.
These are GREAT Apps for students to use for APPLICATION to apply what they have learned by teaching/showing a concept. Unfortunately, these apps are only for the iPad so we do not use them as often as I would like. I do not have enough iPads for everyone so students just use the camera app on our class iPod Touches to record a friend explaining/teaching how to complete a 2 digit subtraction problem with regrouping. If you have many iPads- you must use SCREEN CHOMP! It's a wonderful tool!
Our Favorite Online 2 Digit Subtracting
In this game, students will practice subtracting two-digit numbers. They will earn 10 points for each correct answer and lose 5 points for each incorrect answer. They will also get 5 bonus points each time they score a goal.
Click on the denominations in the cash drawer so that they add up to the correct answer. Some answers might have multiple correct choices. For instance, 1 dollar can be selected by clicking on the 1 dollar bill, or by chosing 4 quarters, or even 10 dimes. Click on the reset button to put the money back in the register and start over again.
Shoot ghosts- correct answer
Great game to practice single digit subtraction
